Question: Is it necessary to document the end time for labor epidurals on the anesthesia record (as long as it is on the billing slip, isn’t that adequate?)
Answer: It is always important to document the end time or delivery time on the anesthesia record in addition to the billing slip. Even though we don’t send the record in initially with the claim, certain insurance companies are starting to come back and ask for the records on labor cases before they will process the claim. If the end time is missing, they will deny the claim. The billing slip is not part of the medical record and therefore can’t be sent in as documentation to payors.
