05/20/2019 – Split case times

Question: When a case is partially covered by insurance and partially cosmetic, do we need to document on the anesthesia record how long each portion took?

Answer: Yes, when a case includes both a covered service and a cosmetic service, it is important to indicate the distinct start and stop times of each procedure on the anesthesia record and ideally the billing slip also.

This can be done by simply writing in the notes section, “cosmetic 1135 – 1207, insurance 1207 – 1243.” This way there is no question for the billing office or insurance company of what the exact times were. The base and time will be billed to the insurance and time only to the patient.
